Anti-Slip Floor Tiles

The practical application of floor tiles can be a serious consideration for many people when choosing a suitable kitchen or bathroom tile. Safety is a paramount feature for any home installation. Unfortunately, not all tiles are manufactured for slip safety, but we have placed all those that are here in this single category. These anti-slip floor tiles are suitable for home installations including bathrooms, wetrooms and kitchens. Their glazes have been appropriately tested and met the criteria to be classified as anti-slip tiles.

Tiles are assigned an ‘R’ value which runs along a scale from R9 (not tested but manufactured to a minimum standard) all the way through to R13 (the highest slip resistance). Floor tiles with an R9 slip rating are most suitable in dry areas. Tiles with an R10 slip rating are better suited to dry domestic areas such as kitchens, however they are also suitable for domestic bathrooms with the use of a bathmat. For wet areas including bathrooms, floor tiles with an R11 and R12 slip rating are the most suitable, and can even be used in public toilets and swimming pools. Tiles with an R13 slip rating are suitable for commercial uses such as kitchens, abattoirs and garage floors. Tiles with an R11, R12 and R13 slip rating are also suitable for outside providing they are porcelain.

Other considerations for a suitable floor tile in wet areas is the tile’s glaze; matt is preferable to gloss and many matt tiles have rough textured finishes to create suitable friction under foot, especially those which imitate natural stone. Rectified tiles which are properly laid on level substrates can prevent lippage which itself can be a trip hazard and smaller format tiles have more grout lines which prevents slippage.
